All You Need Is Love

by Jessica Redland

2017

Jemma is sure she has found her forever person in fiancé Scott until a brutal revelation shatters their plans. Far away from his own family, neurologist Sam is also nursing grief and guilt. Drawn together when Jemma's loved one receives a life changing diagnosis, the pair slowly move from wary acquaintances to friends and maybe something more.

Series background & context

The All You Need is Love mini series brings together two emotionally rich stories set around Whitsborough Bay, North Bay and Castle Street. The books share characters and themes, showing how love can mean romance, certainly, but also friendship, family loyalty and learning to live well with difficult news.

In All You Need Is Love, Jemma believes she is close to the life she has always wanted. She adores her fiancé Scott and is excited about the future they are planning together. A shocking revelation blows that future apart, leaving her scrambling to rebuild her sense of self while she supports a family member facing a life changing illness. Sam, a neurologist with a thriving career and his own recent bereavement, has retreated to Whitsborough Bay in an attempt to protect himself from further hurt. When he becomes involved in Jemma's family situation, professional concern slowly turns into friendship and the possibility of something deeper, if both of them are brave enough to trust again.

The story draws heavily on Jessica Redland's real life experience of running a specialist teddy bear shop. Jemma's mum runs Bear With Me on Castle Street, and the shop is dotted with details that will feel familiar to anyone who has ever loved a particular bear or found comfort in something soft to hold when the world is too sharp.

The Secret to Happiness shifts the spotlight to three women whose paths cross at a local fitness bootcamp. Danniella arrives in Whitsborough Bay determined to keep her head down and her secrets firmly locked away. Alison appears outwardly bubbly and fun, yet is trapped in a damaging relationship, struggles with body image and has no supportive family to lean on. Karen, a driven fitness business owner, has quietly given up on romance while fielding a stream of unsettling anonymous texts. As they sweat through early morning workouts, what begins as casual chat between strangers becomes a deep friendship that helps each of them face the past and start to imagine a kinder future.

Although the books can be read separately, there are rewarding links between them. Karen is first introduced as Jemma's best friend in All You Need Is Love, and The Secret to Happiness offers glimpses of how Jemma and Sam are getting on beyond the end of their own story. Together the two novels explore serious issues such as chronic illness, grief, toxic relationships and self worth, always steering their characters toward connection, hope and the understanding that love comes in many forms.
