Author bio
Jessica Redland was born in Teesside and grew up in the nearby market town of Guisborough, on the edge of the North York Moors, with the coast and moorland both close enough to shape her imagination.
Today she lives in Scarborough on the North Yorkshire coast with her husband, their teenage daughter and a lively sprocker spaniel called Ella, looking out at the same sweep of sea and headland that so often appears in her fiction.
Before she wrote full time, Jessica spent most of her career in human resources, specialising in recruitment, coaching and learning and development. There was also a memorable detour into retail when she opened a specialist teddy bear shop, an experience that later became part of the backstory for her novel All You Need Is Love and its earlier incarnation, Bear With Me.
Writing started as a long term dream rather than a realistic day job. She began drafting what became New Beginnings at Seaside Blooms in 2003, fitting chapters around HR work and shop life, collecting rejections, learning the craft and slowly building a world that felt like home. Over time those early indie titles were reworked, found a new home with a publisher, and helped her reach the milestone of selling more than a million copies.
The heart of that fictional world is Whitsborough Bay, a seaside town inspired by Scarborough with touches of Whitby and Robin Hood's Bay. Many of her series, from the Welcome to Whitsborough Bay quartet to the Christmas on Castle Street stories like Christmas at Carly's Cupcakes and Starry Skies Over The Chocolate Pot Café, circle around its harbour, beach huts and cobbled shopping streets.
Another key setting is Hedgehog Hollow, a fictional farm and wildlife rescue centre tucked into the rolling fields of the Yorkshire Wolds. The idea grew from her aunt's decades of work rehabilitating hedgehogs, and the books follow Samantha Wishaw and a growing cast of volunteers as they juggle prickly family histories with the very real demands of animal rescue.
More recently, Jessica has headed across the country on the page to Derwent Water and the Lake District, drawing on years of family holidays there. The Escape to the Lakes series, beginning with The Start of Something Wonderful and A Breath of Fresh Air, is rooted in Willowdale Hall, its riding stables, lakeside jetties and the tight knit community around them.
Across all these settings her stories circle the same themes. Ordinary people face grief, estrangement, illness, money worries or burnout, and the books sit with those hard moments instead of brushing past them, then gently steer characters toward connection, courage and some kind of happy ending.
Away from the keyboard, Jessica is a self confessed stationery addict with far too many notebooks, a lover of chocolate, hedgehogs, 80s music, collectible teddy bears and lighthouses. After years of fitting writing around a demanding day job, she now spends her working days with her fictional friends, building new corners of Whitsborough Bay, Hedgehog Hollow and Willowdale for readers to escape to.
