Series background & context
The Rift series, co written with E M Ritchie, leaves gothic nightclubs and demon courts behind for a world literally torn open. One moment life is ordinary. The next, a vast tear rips through the land, reality shears apart and nightmares step through.
In The General's Captive that event is simply called the Rift. It shatters cities, swallows streets and floods the world with creatures that once existed only in myth and story. For the human heroine, the catastrophe wipes out any chance of the future she thought she would have. Instead of planning careers or relationships, she is counting weapons, rationing food and learning how to sleep with one eye open.
Survival would be hard enough without the General.
He is the leader of the new order, a commander whose authority stretches across the shattered landscape and the armies of monsters that now stalk it. No one is entirely sure whether he is human, something other, or something in between. He is simply the General, the man you fear, obey and pray never notices you. When he does notice the heroine, it is with a focus that feels as dangerous as any creature clawing its way out of the Rift.
Taken into his stronghold, she has to navigate a world of soldiers, politics and half seen alliances between humans and things that should not exist. The General's motives are as murky as the skies above the ruined cities. Is she a useful piece on the board, a bargaining chip, or something he intends to keep for himself.
Later books, The King's Betrayal and The Kingdom's Fate, promise to widen the scope beyond one fortress and one reluctant captive. As the series continues, readers can expect deeper dives into how the Rift works, what kind of beings command the monsters pouring through it and how the fragile, uneasy alliances holding this new world together begin to fracture.
The tone blends post apocalyptic survival, military fantasy and slow burn romance. There are patrols into broken cityscapes, skirmishes with creatures from other realms, and quiet scenes where two people shaped by violence have to decide whether they can trust each other at all.
If you like your fantasy full of monsters, harsh choices and a commander whose interest feels like both a threat and a lifeline, The Rift offers a fresh, high stakes corner of Hudson's ever expanding universe.
