Draven's Afterlife

by Stephanie Hudson

2019

This companion novel retells the beginning of the Afterlife Saga from Dominic Draven's point of view. Readers see the nightclub, the prophecy and Keira herself through the eyes of the king who has been dreaming of her for centuries and is terrified of what loving her might cost.

Series background & context

King of Kings is a companion series that lets readers crawl inside Dominic Draven's head and watch the beginning of Afterlife through his eyes. Instead of following Keira into the nightclub as an overwhelmed new waitress, you stand beside the king who has been dreaming of her for lifetimes.

In Draven's Afterlife the familiar opening of the saga is retold from the perspective of the man who owns the club, commands the supernatural world and still finds himself blindsided by one shy human girl. We see the weight of ruling, the constant political manoeuvring behind every choice and the private cost of being both angel and demon. Moments that looked controlling or mysterious from Keira's side gain extra layers when you know what Draven is hiding, who he is bargaining with and how terrified he is of losing the one person fate has promised him.

Draven's Electus continues that retelling into the events of the second Afterlife novel. Here the focus sharpens on what it means for Draven to finally find his Electus, the soul destined to complete him and tip the balance between Heaven and Hell. His attempts to protect Keira by pushing her away, staging cruel deceptions and taking on enemies alone are no longer distant, frustrating choices. They are painful sacrifices made by someone who genuinely believes he is the worst thing that could ever happen to her.

Across both books Hudson leans into the contrast between public king and private man. Court scenes, strategy meetings and confrontations with angels and demons sit alongside quiet moments where Draven tries to understand why a mortal girl can undo him with a single look. Familiar side characters like Vincent, Sophia and Pip are given new shading as we watch them through a brother's or ruler's gaze rather than a new employee's confusion.

For long time fans the King of Kings series feels like a director's cut, filling in blank spaces and adding emotional depth to scenes they already know by heart. For new readers it can work as an alternate way into the world, though most people get the most from it after reading at least the early Afterlife books.

Either way, these novels are all about power seen from above, the strain of carrying a crown that spans Heaven and Hell, and the sharp, often painful joy of finally meeting the one person you have been searching for across ages.
