Series background & context
Afterlife Academy takes the sprawling, adult world of the Afterlife Saga and tilts the camera to focus on the teens who wander through its doors. Instead of starting with a human waitress and a demon king, the series opens on a bus full of misfit orphans who think they are heading to an ordinary new school. The building waiting for them is called Afterlife, and nothing about it is ordinary.
At the centre of the group is Theo, a natural leader who has spent his life protecting the other kids from the worst the system can throw at them. Alongside him are sharp tongued, sarcastic, scared and hopeful teens who each carry their own secret. When they arrive, they discover that Afterlife is part academy, part fortress and part gateway into a hidden supernatural world that has been quietly shaping their fate.
The first book, The Glass Dagger, throws the new students into a maze of strange lessons, cryptic teachers and whispers about the King of Heaven and Hell. Detention might involve dodging demons. Homework might mean surviving a training session with someone who looks suspiciously like a vampire king. Trust is in short supply, especially when the faculty seem to know more about the orphans than the teens know about themselves.
As the series moves into The Hells Ring and The Reapers Book, the stakes climb. Theo and his friends are dragged into mysteries that span from Evergreen Falls to underground arenas beneath London. The Devil's Ring, a brutal supernatural fight club, becomes a key location, forcing the group to test the powers they barely understand. Illustrated scenes bring the action to life, leaning into both the horror and the humour of watching teenagers argue with demons and spar with angels.
What makes Afterlife Academy stand out is how it balances danger with growth. These are kids who have already been failed by the mortal world, so the academy becomes both a threat and a strange kind of home. They learn who and what they really are, confront the legacies of the Draven family and uncover how their choices might affect the fragile peace between realms.
Tonally, the series is lighter than the main saga in some ways, with more banter and school chaos, but it never forgets that the backdrop is a looming war. For long time readers it offers fresh angles on familiar faces and places. For new readers it is an accessible way into the Afterlife universe, with plenty of illustrations, mystery and a cast of teens who have no idea just how big the world they have stepped into really is.
