Series background & context
The Reaper Chronicles is Apryl Baker's young adult paranormal series about Ella Grace Banks, a teenager whose life changes after she becomes a living reaper. That title comes with powers, responsibilities, and a frightening new awareness of what moves through the world after dark.
Ella is still a teenager first. She has family, school, friendships, trauma, and everyday worries to deal with, even while the dead and other supernatural threats keep demanding her attention. That balance gives the series its heart. Ella does not enter this new life as a polished hero. She has to learn, panic, recover, and keep going.
Nothing about being a reaper is simple.
The books are set largely around Jacob's Fork, West Virginia, a place where local history and supernatural trouble overlap. Ella is supported by Eli and the people around her, but protection is never guaranteed. Each new threat tests the group in a different way, whether it comes from a local legend, an old evil, a haunted place, or a creature that does not follow human rules.
Beginning with Reaper, the series develops as an ongoing story rather than a set of unrelated adventures. Hijinks & Misdemeanors shows Ella adjusting to her role, while The Reaping Season opens the door to a long-hidden terror in town. Later books such as Lake Cree, Silence, and The Sandman widen the danger and reveal more about the world around her.
It gets creepier as it goes.
The tone is a mix of paranormal adventure, small-town horror, family loyalty, and slow-building romance. There are tense scenes and genuinely unsettling creatures, but Baker also makes room for banter, tenderness, and the awkward parts of growing up. Ella's health, fears, and choices remain part of the story instead of disappearing whenever the action starts.
Readers should begin with Reaper and move forward in publication order. The series shares a wider world with Baker's Ghost Files and Crane Diaries books, so longtime readers may spot connections, but Ella's story gives newcomers a strong entry point of its own.
