Series background & context
The Ghost Files is Apryl Baker's young adult horror series about Mattie Hathaway, a sixteen-year-old who can see and communicate with the dead. That ability is not a fun party trick. It makes Mattie a target, draws her into dangerous mysteries, and complicates an already difficult life shaped by foster care and loss.
The series starts with The Ghost Files, when Mattie becomes determined to learn what happened to Sally, her foster sister who was believed to have run away. Her search brings her into contact with Officer Dan Richards and points toward a killer who is much closer, and much more dangerous, than anyone expects.
The dead have stories. Mattie listens.
From there, the books widen from one haunting case into a larger supernatural story. Mattie faces ghosts, violent secrets, family revelations, and powers that do not fit neatly into ordinary explanations. Each installment gives her another mystery to untangle, but the emotional thread remains her need to understand where she belongs and who she can trust.
The setting has a grounded small-town feel even when the paranormal danger grows huge. Mattie still has relationships to manage and painful memories to carry. Dan becomes an important ally, but the series does not pretend that partnership makes the risks disappear. If anything, caring about people gives the villains more leverage.
It is creepy, but never only creepy.
Baker mixes horror with mystery, found family, and romance. The books can be tense and dark, especially when Mattie faces forces that know far too much about her, yet the series also gives readers space to care about the people around her. That balance is a big part of why it works.
Begin with The Ghost Files, then continue through The Ghost Files 2, The Ghost Files 3, and The Ghost Files 3.5 before moving into the two-part fourth volume and The Ghost Files 5. Silas is a related novella for readers who want more from the world. Reading in order is strongly recommended because the mysteries and character history build book by book.
