Romance matters, but the paranormal threat and family history keep the plot moving. Relationships are tested by secrets, loyalty, and the question of whether love can survive the truth.

Baker uses Jacob's Fork as a place where new beginnings are possible, but only after the characters confront what has been waiting beneath the surface.
