Series background & context

At the heart of The Original Sinners is Nora Sutherlin, an erotica author who pays the bills by writing dirty books and spends her nights working as a professional dominatrix. Orbiting her are two people she can never quite leave behind, Jesuit priest Marcus Stearns and French club owner Kingsley Edge.

The early novels, often called the Red Years, drop readers into Nora's present day life in New York. In The Siren, The Angel, The Prince, and The Mistress, she juggles a new publishing career, a complicated arrangement with Søren, her first love, and growing ties to the lushly dangerous world of Kingsley's underground kink club, the 8th Circle.

Those books are as much about emotional risk as they are about sex. Scenes at the club, in confessionals, and on private estates all circle the same questions: who holds the power here, what happens when someone finally says no, and how do you forgive the people who hurt you the most but also know you best.

The White Years books, beginning with The Saint, turn back the clock to show how Nora, Søren, and Kingsley were forged. You see teenage Eleanor meet the beautiful priest who will change her life, follow Kingsley as he claws his way from wreckage to ruling his own dungeon empire, and watch the pieces slide into place for the woman who will become Mistress Nora.

Later entries like The Chateau, Picture Perfect Cowboy, The Priest, and the holiday collections push the series outward. They send familiar characters into French sex cults, Western rodeos, New Orleans murder investigations, and snowbound Christmases, while still tying every adventure back to the core found family that began in Nora's cramped little house with an unpaid intern on her couch.

Tone wise, expect high heat, gallows humor, and a lot of Catholic guilt. Scenes of bondage and impact play sit next to quiet conversations about vocation and conscience. Reisz is interested in consent, negotiation, and chosen families, so for every brutal scene there is usually a moment of tenderness or hard won honesty.

You can treat the Original Sinners universe as one big, interlocking saga, dipping into novellas and Pulp Library titles for extra depth, or simply read the main novels straight through. Either way, it is a series about people who insist on living, loving, and believing on their own terms, even when it hurts.
