The Merlin Codex Books in Order

Robert Holdstock's Merlin Codex is a three-book fantasy sequence that begins with Celtika, continues in The Iron Grail, and concludes with The Broken Kings. It takes familiar names from Arthurian legend and classical myth, then sends them somewhere less familiar: a shifting ancient world where different stories, places, and eras can collide.

This Merlin is young, restless, and far from the settled sage of later legend. He has great power, but using magic shortens his life, so every decision comes with a cost. He is also a traveler who does not fully understand his own history, which makes him an outsider even in lands filled with gods, warriors, and enchantment.

Jason and Medea are here too.

The series begins in the far north, where Merlin's path crosses with the stories of Jason, Medea, and the Argonauts. Jason is searching for sons hidden from him, while Merlin is pulled into the dangerous wake of that search. From there, the books move through Celtic kingdoms, strange islands, ghostly enemies, ancient fortresses, and a world where the future Arthurian age has not yet arrived.

The main tension comes from competing duties. Jason wants his family back. Merlin wants freedom, knowledge, and a way to survive his own gifts. Medea remains one of the story's most powerful and difficult figures. Rulers and warriors have their own claims on the travelers, and even the ship Argo has a history and a will of its own.

Read the books in order. Celtika introduces the central cast and the unusual blend of Greek, Finnish, Celtic, and Arthurian material. The Iron Grail brings Jason, Merlin, and the restored Argo toward a threatened fortress and a coming war. The Broken Kings gives more space to Merlin's past, Medea, the enchantress Niiv, and the future shape of the legend.

This is expansive fantasy, but it stays close to people with messy loyalties and real fears. Readers who enjoy mythology without wanting a strict retelling will find plenty to explore. Holdstock treats myths as living things, able to change when they meet a new landscape, a new storyteller, or a character determined to escape the role history has given them.
