Author bio

Robert Holdstock was born in Hythe, Kent, on August 2, 1948. He grew up around the Romney Marsh and the woods of Kent, landscapes that stayed with him for the rest of his life. In his fiction, forests are rarely just scenery. They hold memory, danger, old stories, and the uneasy feeling that the past is not finished with us.

He was the oldest of five children. His father was a police officer and his mother worked as a nurse. Holdstock attended Gillingham Grammar School, then studied applied zoology at the University College of North Wales before earning a master's degree in medical zoology from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.

Science was his day job at first. From 1971 to 1974, he worked in medical research in London, while also writing stories and helping produce a science fiction magazine. His first published story, "Pauper's Plot," appeared in 1968. By 1976, he had left research to write full time.

That change gave him room to range widely. His early novels included the science fiction books Eye Among the Blind, Earthwind, and Where Time Winds Blow. He also wrote horror, television tie-ins, reference books, and brisk sword-and-sorcery adventures under several pen names, including Ken Blake, Chris Carlsen, Robert Faulcon, Richard Kirk, Robert Black, and Steven Eisler.

Then came Mythago Wood.

Published as a novel in 1984, it introduced Ryhope Wood, an ancient English forest where figures shaped by shared human memory can become physically real. The book brought together Holdstock's interests in folklore, psychology, landscape, and family conflict without making any of them feel like homework. Its success led to further visits to the Wood in Lavondyss, The Bone Forest, The Hollowing, Gate of Ivory, Gate of Horn, and Avilion.

Readers often come to Holdstock for that strange mix of the ordinary and the mythic. His characters may be scientists, grieving parents, children, soldiers, or people simply trying to get home, but they find themselves facing stories older than they are. His forests, ruins, coastlines, and forgotten places are physical places first. Then they become something harder to explain.

He also returned to legend in the Merlin Codex, beginning with Celtika. These books bring a younger Merlin into contact with Jason, Medea, the Argonauts, Celtic rulers, and stories from several myth traditions. Elsewhere, books such as The Fetch and Ancient Echoes show his fondness for supernatural suspense, troubled families, and the dangerous pull of buried history.

Holdstock received major genre awards for his work, including honors for Mythago Wood, Lavondyss, and the novella The Ragthorn, written with Garry Kilworth. He lived in North London for much of his adult life and continued writing until his death on November 29, 2009. His books still offer a memorable invitation: step off the mapped path, and see what old story is waiting in the trees.
