Mythago Wood Books in Order

The Mythago Wood books, also called the Ryhope Wood cycle, are Robert Holdstock's best-known fantasy sequence. The stories are connected by an ancient English woodland that is much larger inside than it appears from the outside. Ryhope Wood holds memory, legend, fear, and the raw material from which human beings make stories.

Inside the Wood, figures called mythagos can take physical form. They are not simply famous characters from old tales. They are shaped by the deep, half-remembered patterns of myth and by the people who encounter them. That makes them vivid, dangerous, and never entirely predictable.

The Wood has its own purposes.

The series begins with Mythago Wood, in which Steven Huxley returns from war to find that his father and brother have both been consumed by an obsession with Ryhope Wood. His search leads him into the forest and toward Guiwenneth, a mythago linked to an old warrior story. The book sets up the cycle's lasting concerns: family bonds, grief, folklore, desire, and the risks of treating an unknowable place as something that can be mapped or controlled.

Later books change protagonists and moods rather than merely extending Steven's story. Lavondyss follows Tallis Keeton on a search for her lost brother that takes her toward the source of myth itself. The Bone Forest adds stories and backstory around the Huxley family. The Hollowing brings scientists and a damaged child into contact with distorted new mythagos. Gate of Ivory returns to Christian Huxley, while Avilion revisits the wider Huxley family and the long consequences of life within the Wood.

Merlin's Wood is a related, more separate tale set in Brittany's Broceliande forest. It shares the cycle's interest in mythic landscapes and old enchantments, though it does not continue the central Ryhope plot in the same way.

Start with Mythago Wood. After that, publication order is rewarding, but the books are not built like a conventional quest series. Each offers a different route into the same deep territory. Expect wonder and danger in equal measure, along with characters who discover that myths are not safe because they are old. In Holdstock's hands, old stories are alive, hungry, and still looking for someone to carry them forward.
