Series background & context

The Marvelous Munroes is one of Regina Scott’s earlier Regency families, and it has an easy, affectionate feel from the start. The series follows two sisters, their cousin, and a dear friend as they each find love while trying to navigate money worries, rival families, and the general chaos of Society.

What gives the books their personality is the Munroe family’s situation. They are not gliding through the Season without a care. In My True Love Gave to Me, Genevieve Munroe is trying to give her newly impoverished family one last happy Christmas when a bold wager with longtime rival Alan Pentercast changes everything. The Rogue Next Door keeps the connection to the Pentercasts alive through Allison Munroe and the boy next door she should not want. The Marquis' Kiss turns to Margaret Munroe, whose outspoken ways make her memorable even before a marquis starts seeing her clearly. The novella A Match for Mother rounds things out with a widowed heroine and three sons who know exactly whom they want for a father.

These books feel close to home.

Even when the settings are fashionable, the stakes stay personal. Scott is less interested in glitter for its own sake than in what happens when a family needs money, a young woman is expected to make a good match, or a longtime acquaintance suddenly looks very different. The humor is gentle, and the emotional movement comes from watching familiar people become brave enough to speak plainly.

If you like connected Regencies with holiday warmth, neighborly rivalries, and heroines who are a little more original than Society finds comfortable, this series is a good fit. It is lighter than Scott’s suspense driven work, but it still has plenty of momentum. Mostly, it offers the pleasure of spending time with a family that is worried, loving, occasionally chaotic, and very easy to root for.
