Series background & context

Fortune's Brides is one of Regina Scott’s most playful Regency setups. In these books, the mysterious Meredith Thorn runs the Fortune Employment Agency, helping gentlewomen who need respectable positions. Her greatest ally is not a clerk or a patron. It is her cat, Fortune, who seems to have a remarkable gift for steering people toward the exact assignment, and the exact spouse, they did not know they needed.

That idea gives the series its charm right away. One woman takes a governess position and ends up changing a duke’s household in Never Doubt a Duke. Another is pushed into a fake engagement with a baronet who spies for England in Never Borrow a Baronet. Later books pair a woman in hiding with an earl, a would-be natural philosopher with a viscount, a former boxer with the woman teaching him Society’s rules, and a shy baker with a grieving marquess who needs help caring for his child.

Fortune the cat never seems to miss.

Even with the matchmaking gimmick, the series stays grounded in the practical problems facing its heroines. These women need work, safety, standing, or a way to support themselves. Scott uses the agency to put them in unusual situations, but the emotional pull comes from watching them discover they are capable of more than the world has allowed them to believe. The men, for their part, usually have households in disorder, reputations to manage, or hearts already bruised by loss or betrayal.

The tone is warm, witty, and lightly suspenseful. There are false engagements, hidden identities, scientific ambitions, complicated families, and just enough danger to keep the stories moving. The Christmas prequel, Always Kiss at Christmas, also helps explain the web of relationships that feeds into the later romances.

Readers should expect a strong sense of connection from book to book. Characters reappear, families overlap, and what begins as one cat’s uncanny knack for romance grows into a whole corner of Regency England where jobs turn into courtships, and courtships turn into surprisingly sturdy futures. If you like sweet Regencies with humor, matchmaking, and a little household chaos, this is one of Scott’s friendliest places to start.
