Series background & context

Guarding Her Heart is a later branch of Regina Scott’s Fortune's Brides world, and it leans more openly into protection, danger, and the uneasy closeness that grows when two people are forced to rely on each other. If the original Fortune books are built around jobs turning into courtships, these stories are built around danger turning into devotion.

The heroes are bodyguards, former soldiers, or disciplined men who make rules for themselves about duty and attachment. Those rules do not last long. In Never Beguile a Bodyguard, Finn Huber is assigned to protect governess Abigail Winchester, a woman whose past has already placed her at risk. In Never Admire an Adventurer, Kristof Tanner expects a dull job guarding an heiress and gets a fake engagement instead. In Never Hire a Hero, Stephen Roth, a former soldier with a ruthless reputation, becomes tutor and unlikely protector to a widowed countess and her children.

Protection is the promise, but vulnerability is the real subject.

That is what ties the books together. Each heroine has something to lose, whether it is safety, independence, children, or hard won peace. Each hero believes distance is the honorable choice, until closeness proves far more necessary. Scott uses that tension well. These are still sweet Regencies, but there is a little more edge and a little more Christmas or winter coziness pressed against the danger.

Readers should expect mysteries, false assumptions, marriages of convenience, and men who are far softer underneath than their roles suggest. Guarding Her Heart works nicely for anyone who likes Scott’s warm tone but wants a touch more suspense in the mix.
