Series background & context
The Mad Morelands is one of Candace Camp's biggest and most distinctive family series. Set in the late nineteenth century, it follows a wealthy, eccentric clan whose stories combine romance with psychics, old houses, criminal plots, buried history, and just enough family chaos to justify the title. It starts with Mesmerized and grows from there through Beyond Compare, Winterset, An Unexpected Pleasure, and later books that return to younger members of the family.
This family is a lot.
That is the fun of it. Olivia Moreland investigates spiritualists. Kyria Moreland gets pulled into danger by a mysterious antiquity. Reed Moreland returns to a haunted-feeling house tied to heartbreak and murder. Later books bring in reporters, detectives, disguises, kidnappings, and questions about who people really are. By the time the series continues with His Sinful Touch, His Wicked Charm, Her Scandalous Pursuit, and His Improper Lady, the Moreland world has become broad enough to support all kinds of romantic mysteries.
Even with all that plot, the family remains the anchor. The Morelands are affectionate, exasperating, nosy, loyal, and impossible to ignore. Camp makes them feel lived-in, which is why readers can enjoy the recurring faces almost as much as the central couple in each book.
If you like historical romance that is willing to be a little odd, a little gothic, and a little adventurous, this is a wonderful series to settle into. It has humor, melodrama, paranormal hints, real suspense, and a family big enough to keep the books connected without making them feel identical.
