Author bio
Candace Camp was born in Amarillo, Texas, and grew up in a newspaper family. Her mother had worked as a reporter, her father was a newspaper business manager, and stories were part of the air around her from the start. She began making up tales as a child, and by about age ten she was writing them down, partly for fun and partly because writing gave her a quiet place to think.
She stayed a writer in private long before she became one in public. Camp studied at the University of Texas at Austin and later earned her bachelor's degree from West Texas State University. She taught school for a time in Eureka Springs, Arkansas, then worked in a bank trust department in North Carolina. After that she went to law school at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
Law school was not supposed to lead to a romance career. But it did.
While she was studying law, she was also reading romance novels for pleasure and wondering if she could write one herself. She finished that first book, Bonds of Love, during law school, and it was published in 1978 under the pen name Lisa Gregory. Camp has said that law school taught her discipline, which may be one of the more practical routes anyone has ever taken into historical romance.
Over the years she also wrote as Kristin James and Sharon Stephens before publishing widely under her own name. That long stretch of work helps explain why her backlist feels so varied. Some books are sweeping American historicals, some are contemporary romances, and many of her best known titles settle into Regency England, the period she has said she loves most.
Readers who come to Camp for the first time often start with books like The Marriage Wager, A Lady Never Tells, Treasured, or A Momentary Marriage. They tend to stay for the mix she does especially well: strong romantic tension, lively family dynamics, a little mystery, and heroines who are sharper, tougher, or more practical than society expects. Even when the books are warm and witty, there is usually a secret, a threat, or a family mess waiting in the wings.
She likes a big cast.
That shows in series such as the Mad Morelands, where romance shares space with family legends, psychics, missing artifacts, and old houses full of trouble. It also shows in books set in Texas or the post Civil War South, where land, money, and family loyalty matter just as much as attraction. Camp's stories are romantic, but they are rarely only about romance. The outside world always presses in.
Her success has been steady and long-running. She is a New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author, and she has also received honors including Affaire de Coeur awards and a Romantic Times lifetime achievement award for western romances. Those facts tell part of the story, but the better explanation is simple: she has spent decades writing books that are easy to fall into and hard to leave.
Today she lives in Austin, Texas, with her husband, Pete Hopcus. Their daughter, Anastasia Hopcus, is also an author. Camp's career began with a manuscript written beside stacks of law books, and it grew into one of the deeper backlists in historical romance.
