The book also brings in Oliver Blue, a homeless boy who is tortured and brainwashed into becoming a weapon against the people he should have been able to trust. That twist gives the second novel a darker, sadder edge.

Even with the paranormal framework, these books are really about hunted kids trying to build some kind of chosen family before fear tears them apart. There is action, conspiracy, romance, and a lot of emotional stress, but the heart of the series is simple: what happens when young people discover they are powerful at exactly the moment the world decides they should not exist.

The Los Angeles setting helps a lot. Dane uses the city as a place of movement, hiding, collision, and threat, which suits the series well. Readers who like YA stories about psychic abilities, secret groups, and relentless pursuit will probably find a lot to like here. The tone is brisk and urgent, with just enough mystery around the larger forces in play to keep the books feeling unsettled. These are not gentle paranormal coming-of-age stories. They are survival stories with powers attached.
