Sweet Justice Books in Order

Sweet Justice begins as a hard-edged Chicago suspense series and then grows into something a little bigger and more covert. The first books center on bounty hunter Jessie Beckett, a woman with a brutal past, sharp instincts, and no patience for predators. As the series moves on, Dane widens the world through the shadowy organization known as the Sentinels, but the emotional core stays the same. These are stories about damaged people trying to push back against uglier ones.

Jessie is where it starts.

In Evil Without a Face, she is hunting a child abuser when the trail opens into a trafficking network. The case pulls in computer genius Seth Harper, vice detective Samantha Cooper, and former football player Payton Archer, whose missing niece becomes part of the crisis. That first book sets the tone for the series quickly: personal stakes, dark crimes, women who fight back, and a city that never feels especially safe.

The Wrong Side of Dead brings Jessie and Seth closer to the center. Seth wakes in a motel room beside a corpse with no memory of what happened, and Jessie has to clear him while both of them circle old trauma they would rather leave buried. The suspense is still the engine, but Dane spends just as much time on trust, loyalty, and the damage that never quite heals cleanly.

By The Echo of Violence, the series shifts toward the Sentinels, a covert group that works in the gray spaces regular law enforcement cannot always reach. Sentinels agent Alexa Marlowe teams up with mercenary Jackson Kinkaid after a deadly terrorist raid linked to hostages and online murder videos. The action pushes beyond Chicago toward Cuba and international stakes, but the mood stays consistent with the earlier books: raw, tense, and morally messy.

Reckoning for the Dead continues that wider arc, this time with the reported death of Sentinels chief Garrett Wheeler setting off a hunt for the truth. By then the series has become less about one single heroine and more about a connected world of operatives, survivors, and broken professionals carrying justice into dangerous places.

If you like romantic suspense where the romance never softens the threat too much, Sweet Justice is a good fit. The crimes are ugly, the characters are scraped up, and the stories care more about pressure than polish. Dane is especially good at writing women who are competent without pretending competence protects them from pain. That gives the series its bite. It is not sweet in any cozy sense. The title is a promise that justice, when it comes, will have to be fought for.
