In Out for Blood, Mercer gets a lead connected to the murder of his family and takes the fight into cartel territory near El Paso. The case is personal in the deepest way, and Dane leans into that. This is not abstract justice for Mercer. It is grief with a target. Vigilante Justice widens the lens again, linking Mercer to a missing persons case in Montana and exposing a bigger conspiracy involving abducted young people and a well-funded criminal operation.

What makes the series stand out is the uneasy balance between righteous anger and real danger. Dane does not pretend vigilante methods come clean. Mercer is not a neat hero, and the books know that. He is effective because he has stopped waiting for permission, but that choice keeps raising the same question: how far do you go before justice turns into something colder?

The setting helps, too. Zion in the Wyoming mountains gives the books a fortified, off-grid feel, while the cases pull the team into border cities, trafficking routes, and violent intersections between money and power.
