Series background & context
Amanda Hocking's The Hollows is a zombie survival series about the people who keep going after the world has already fallen apart. It begins with Hollowland, where nineteen-year-old Remy King is crossing a ruined America to reach her younger brother, Max. She is practical, stubborn, and prepared to do whatever it takes to keep her family alive.
The zombies are a constant threat, but they are not the only danger. Remy and the people she meets have to contend with armed groups, unreliable safe zones, scarce supplies, and the hard choices that come with protecting a small circle of people. The series keeps the action moving, but its real center is the question of what family means when every familiar rule has disappeared.
Remy does not wait around to be rescued.
Her journey brings together an uneven group of survivors, including her brother, medical student Blue Adams, rock star Lazlo Durante, and teenager Harlow Smith. Their different skills and loyalties matter as much as their ability to fight. Trust is always fragile, especially when a place that looks safe may be more dangerous than the wilderness outside it.
The early books follow the first years of the apocalypse. Hollowland sets the crisis in motion, while Hollowmen moves the survivors into a military quarantine and makes clear that organized authority has its own costs. Hollow Stars shifts attention to Lazlo after the quarantine collapses, giving the larger disaster a more personal, lonely angle. Short stories such as Into the Hollow Dark, Into the Hollow Horde, and Into the Hollow Years fill in parts of the timeline from other characters' viewpoints.
Later entries widen the story rather than simply repeating the first journey. Hollow Child returns to Remy nearly a decade after the outbreak, when survival has become a way of life but new threats are changing what safety looks like. Hollow Valley follows sixteen-year-old Stella King, who has grown up in the aftermath and must leave a fragile riverboat refuge when Remy disappears.
It is horror, but it is also a road story.
Readers can expect tense escapes, battered communities, messy relationships, and characters who are often more dangerous than the undead. Start with Hollowland for Remy's full story, then follow the main novels in order. The companion shorts work best between the novels they accompany, but the central books provide the main path through the series.
