Series background & context
The Hollows series takes place in an alternate version of our world where a bioengineered tomato carried a deadly virus that killed a huge portion of the human population. Supernatural beings, long hidden, survived the pandemic far better than ordinary people, and in the aftermath they stepped into the open to keep civilization running. The catastrophe is remembered simply as the Turn, and it left Cincinnati, with its supernatural enclave known as the Hollows, as one of the key cities where humans and Inderlanders try to live side by side.
At the center of the series is Rachel Morgan, a stubborn earth witch who starts out as a runner for Inderland Security, the supernatural branch of law enforcement. Fed up with bad assignments and office politics, she quits, which effectively puts a contract on her head. She escapes with two unlikely partners, living vampire Ivy Tamwood and foul-mouthed pixy Jenks, and the three of them set up shop in a deconsecrated church just outside the Hollows. From there, Rachel takes on work that ranges from routine bail jumps to demon attacks and political conspiracies.
Rachel’s early jobs lean heavily into bounty hunting and magical police work. As the books progress, the cases get bigger and stranger. She digs into the secrets of corporate tycoon Trent Kalamack, who is much more than he appears. She crosses paths with demons in the ever-after, the parallel realm where ley lines run strongest. She learns that witches, demons, elves, vampires, and were-creatures all have tangled, bloody histories that the Turn only brought to the surface.
A large part of the appeal comes from watching Rachel grow. Her magic shifts from simple earth charms to ley-line work and, eventually, demon magic, and every step has a personal cost. She wrestles with questions about identity when she discovers why demons are so interested in her, and she struggles with what it means to be a "witch-born demon" in a world that fears both. Through it all, her loyalty to Ivy, Jenks, and a widening circle of friends keeps her anchored when power and politics threaten to swallow her.
The series mixes self-contained plots with long storylines. Early novels introduce the Turn, Cincinnati’s uneasy truce, and the push–pull between human institutions and Inderlander courts. Later books explore the ever-after’s slow collapse, vampire souls and what happens to them, and Rachel’s new role as Cincinnati’s demon subrosa, the mediator who speaks for demonkind. Companion works like The Hollows Insider, Into the Woods, and the graphic novels Blood Work and Blood Crime fill in side stories and world detail.
Tonally, expect fast-paced investigations, dark humor, and plenty of banter alongside real emotional fallout. The Hollows is urban fantasy with a strong mystery spine, but it is also about found family, uneasy alliances, and the way small choices accumulate over years. The books reward reading in order, since relationships shift, old enemies become allies, and past bargains keep echoing forward.
If you want a long series where the world deepens and the characters actually live with their decisions, this is the place to start.
