Author bio

Amanda Hocking grew up in Austin, Minnesota, and says she wanted to write from the moment she learned how. As a teenager, she wrote constantly, turning ideas into stories long before she had a publishing plan or an audience waiting for them.

After high school, Hocking worked in a group home for people with disabilities and later studied human services. Writing stayed central to her life. She built up a stack of finished novels while working, learning through persistence and plenty of rejection letters.

Then she took a different route.

In 2010, at age twenty-five, Hocking began self-publishing her fiction as ebooks. Her early releases included vampire romance, fantasy, and zombie horror, books written for readers who wanted danger, romance, and otherworldly problems in the same package. The response was unusually swift. Within her first year of self-publishing, she had sold more than a million ebooks.

That breakthrough made Hocking one of the best-known examples of an author finding a wide readership independently. In 2011, she signed a four-book deal for the Watersong series, while her previously self-published Trylle Trilogy was also picked up for print publication. The change brought her books into more stores, but it did not change the fast-moving, reader-first energy that shaped her earliest work.

Her stories often begin with a young person discovering that ordinary life has been hiding something strange. In Switched, Wendy Everly learns she was exchanged at birth and belongs in a secret troll society. Wake follows Gemma Fisher after three mysterious girls draw her toward the sea and a frightening new identity. Frostfire moves into the snowbound Kanin kingdom, where Bryn Aven wants to prove herself as a tracker despite being treated as an outsider.

Romance matters in Hocking's books, but it is rarely simple. Her characters are pulled between family, duty, attraction, and the fear that the truth about themselves will cost them the life they know. That mix also runs through My Blood Approves, her vampire saga about Alice Bonham, and The Hollows, a zombie survival series led by fiercely protective Remy King.

She also likes folklore, mythology, and a strong sense of place. Her fictional worlds range from icy troll kingdoms and forest realms to a Louisiana sideshow, an isolated religious community in 1890s Michigan, and an America broken by a zombie plague. The stakes can get big, but the stories keep returning to questions of belonging, loyalty, and who gets to decide a person's future.

Hocking lives in Rochester, Minnesota, with her husband, stepson, and a lively household of pets. She has said she enjoys folklore and mythology, dinosaurs, cartoons, animals, and dark romance novels.

She is still building new worlds. Recent work includes later entries in The Hollows, the fairy-tale-based Seven Fallen Hearts books, and the romantic fantasy series Muses of Wespen.
