The Hellbreakers Books in Order

The Hellbreakers is a zombie-apocalypse companion series set in the same world as James N. Cook's Surviving the Dead books. It shifts the action west, following Alexander Muir, a former professional fighter who has survived six years alone in the Arizona desert.

Alex has learned how to stay alive without depending on anyone. That has meant keeping his distance, trusting his own skills, and avoiding the kind of commitments that can get a person killed. But isolation is harder to maintain when organized groups begin trying to reclaim ground from both the undead and rival survivors.

Then Phoenix becomes the problem no one can ignore.

In The Hellbreakers, Alex is drawn into the orbit of the Third Colorado Volunteer Militia, a group looking toward Phoenix, Arizona, as a place that might be recovered. The city is still packed with the dead, and any attempt to enter it carries obvious risks. The mission also asks Alex to decide whether he can be part of something bigger than his own day-to-day survival.

The series keeps its focus close to Alex, which gives the story a leaner, more personal feel than a sprawling community saga. He is tough, trained, and used to handling himself, but those strengths do not solve every problem. Building trust, accepting help, and taking responsibility for other people are just as important as winning a fight.

The danger comes from several directions. The dead remain a constant threat, especially around Phoenix, while living groups compete for territory, supplies, and control. The Storm Road Tribe becomes a major enemy, bringing violence and uncertainty to the militia's efforts. The world may have ended years earlier, but nobody has reached a stable peace.

In The Hellbreakers 2: Emergence, Alex is recovering from earlier fighting when he is asked to guide Captain Caleb Hicks in a hunt for the Storm Road Tribe. That mission opens up a larger danger and connects the series more directly to the wider Surviving the Dead setting.
