James N. Cook was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, and has built his fiction around people trying to stay useful when the world gets dangerous. Before writing novels, he served in the U.S. Navy and spent time working in a cubicle, two experiences that sit at very different ends of the daily-excitement scale.
He has also long been interested in martial arts, hiking, camping, travel, video games, and graphic novels. Those interests show up in his books through practical details, close-quarters action, and characters who have to think about food, shelter, weapons, and the next safe place to sleep.
He likes stories about survival, but survival is never just about having the right gear.
Cook began writing in March 2011 after years of thinking it would be fun to tackle a zombie-apocalypse novel. His first book, No Easy Hope, came out that same year. It introduces Eric Riordan, a formerly comfortable man forced to face the collapse of ordinary life after the dead begin to rise.
The book became the starting point for the long-running Surviving the Dead series. Eric's friendship with the capable, battle-tested Gabriel Garrett gives the early books their center, while the larger story follows survivor communities, dangerous journeys, hard choices, and the trouble caused by the living as often as the dead.
The apocalypse has a way of making every small decision matter.
In This Shattered Land, Eric and Gabriel leave the Appalachian mountains for a dangerous push west. Warrior Within brings them into a conflict over the safety of Hollow Rock, while Fire in Winter puts Gabriel on a harsh road shaped by grief and revenge. Later books such as The Darkest Place, Storm of Ghosts, War Without End, and Absolute Zero widen the focus to other survivors and larger fights over what kind of country can be rebuilt.
Cook also returned to that setting through The Hellbreakers, which follows former fighter Alexander Muir in the Arizona desert. The connected novels give readers a new part of the same broken world, with Phoenix, militia operations, and threats that stretch beyond one survivor's immediate circle.
More recently, he moved into LitRPG territory with Path of Violence. That series follows Aiden Wyatt after a game-like System transforms Earth, turning personal ambition, monsters, and rising power into a dangerous new reality.
Cook lives in North Carolina. He has described himself as someone who has trouble staying in one place for long, which fits an author whose characters are so often on the move.
