Peter Ritchie Books in Order

Peter Ritchie was a Scottish crime writer whose route to fiction began far from a desk. He came from East Lothian and followed his family into the fishing trade, starting work as a deep-sea fisherman at just 15.

It was a hard, practical start to working life. After several years at sea, Ritchie changed course and joined the police, beginning the career that would give his novels their close-up view of investigations, criminals, victims, and the people caught between them.

He worked his way through CID, murder squads, and regional crime squads in Scotland. Later, he managed the Organised Crime Unit at the National Criminal Intelligence Service in London, leading a team drawn from different law-enforcement and security branches. He also spent five years in The Hague as the United Kingdom liaison officer at Europol.

Ritchie had seen the job from plenty of angles.

After returning to Scotland, he headed a Major Crime Team and later took on advisory work in Croatia. Following retirement, he worked on private investigations and contributed to public inquiries, including the inquiry into the murder of Billy Wright at the Maze Prison and another concerning hospital-acquired infections at Vale of Leven Hospital.

Writing had been on his mind for a long time.

He wrote poetry, painted and drew, and experimented with short stories that he kept in drawers. For years, he had only the opening of what would become his first novel. Eventually, he sat down and found the rest of the story. In 2014, he published Noble Cause, the first book in the Grace den Herder trilogy, followed by The Shortest Days of the Year and Red Sky in the Morning.

Those early novels introduced a determined detective working through the pressures of serious crime, organised criminals, and the aftermath of Northern Ireland’s conflict. Revised versions of the three books later appeared as Cause of Death, Evidence of Death, and Shores of Death, with the detective known as Grace Macallan. Ritchie continued her story in Where No Shadows Fall and Our Little Secrets, moving between Edinburgh, Glasgow, Belfast, prisons, police offices, and the criminal networks that link them.

His books are police procedurals, but they leave room for the personal cost of the work. Ritchie was interested in why people make bad choices, how power operates in criminal circles, and how detectives carry difficult cases with them. His novella Maxine’s Story turns its attention to a woman trying to escape addiction and danger in Leith, while Bits of Life collects shorter work.

Peter Ritchie died in December 2021. He left behind crime novels shaped by a life spent observing people under pressure, both on the job and on the page.
