Author bio
Judith Pella built her fiction out of two longtime loves: story and history. As a child, she read widely and paid attention to the way books, films, and family stories could open a door into another time. History especially caught her imagination because it gave her facts to work with, then let her wonder what ordinary people might have felt inside those facts.
She did not head straight into publishing. Pella earned a degree in social science, worked as a registered nurse, and later spent years in education as an instructional teacher's aide. That mix shows up in her novels. She tends to write about people under pressure, but she also likes practical detail: how a railroad is built, how a family survives a journey, how a war reaches the kitchen table.
The writing started quietly.
Pella began putting stories on paper as a way to relax. The turning point came through her friend Michael Phillips, already a published writer, who read her work and invited her to collaborate on a Scottish historical novel. That book became The Heather Hills of Stonewycke, the first volume in the Stonewycke saga and Pella's first published novel.
That changed the shape of her life.
With Phillips, she went on to write several large historical series, including Stonewycke, The Journals of Corrie Belle Hollister, The Russians, and the Highland books. Those stories move from Scotland to gold-rush California to imperial Russia, but they keep circling the same human questions: what family means, how faith survives fear, and what forgiveness costs when pride has had years to harden.
Pella also worked with Tracie Peterson on the railroad-centered Ribbons of Steel and Ribbons West books. Those novels follow Carolina Adams, James Baldwin, and the next generation of the Baldwin family through a changing America. Readers who like her work often come for the history, then stay for the family drama, the slow-burn romances, and the steady Christian thread that runs underneath the action.
Her solo books widened the map again. Frontier Lady and the Lone Star Legacy books head into post-Civil War Texas. Texas Angel and Heaven's Road use the frontier to explore race, revenge, and redemption. Written on the Wind opens the Daughters of Fortune series, following the Hayes sisters through World War II, from California to Russia, the Philippines, and the home front.
Pella's fiction is usually big in scope, but it works best in the smaller moments: a letter, a choice made in anger, a family secret finally spoken aloud. She wrote more than thirty novels, many of them historical Christian fiction, and longtime author notes place her home life in Oregon, especially the Scappoose area.
