Series background & context
The Harlequin Crew takes Caroline Peckham's darker contemporary style and drops it into Sunset Cove, a town where gangs, family loyalties, and old betrayals shape everything. The series starts with Rogue Easton returning home with nothing much left but anger, survival instinct, and a need to settle the score.
Her history with the Harlequin boys is what gives the series its charge. Fox, JJ, Chase, and Maverick were once her people, then became part of the damage that wrecked her life. So the books run on a strong second-chance and enemies-to-lovers current, but not in a soft way. Every reunion is tangled up with resentment, unfinished grief, and the question of whether trust can be rebuilt at all.
Sunset Cove matters here.
It is not just a backdrop. The beach-town setting gives the books a strange mix of freedom and threat, all bright water on the surface and criminal rot underneath. Turf wars, local legends, and buried secrets keep the pressure on while Rogue tries to reclaim power in a place that once swallowed her whole.
As the series goes on, it opens into something bigger than simple revenge. The crew's shared past, the lies they were fed, and the enemies circling them all become part of a larger fight for control. Romance matters, but so do loyalty, identity, and the question of who gets to define the story of what happened.
If you like reverse harem romance with a strong sense of place, a heroine who bites back, and a cast that keeps hurting each other even while trying to hold on, The Harlequin Crew is one of Peckham's most emotionally messy series in a good way.
