Series background & context

Age of Vampires is a dystopian paranormal romance set in a future where vampires rule openly and humans are raised in controlled Realms to be used as blood sources. It is one of Caroline Peckham's darker world-building projects, not because it is the bloodiest thing she has written, but because the social system itself is so bleak from the start.

The series follows twin sisters Montana and Callie, and splitting them is what powers the story. When they are chosen for a testing process tied to the ruling vampire princes, their paths break apart. One is dragged toward the royal side of the system. The other gets pushed toward rebellion and the possibility of fighting back.

The world runs on blood, class, and control.

That gives the books a useful double perspective. You get the seduction and threat of the vampire courts on one side, and the desperation of resistance on the other. The sisters stay linked emotionally, but their experiences of the world become very different, which lets the series explore power from more than one angle.

Although this is a romance series, the wider conflict matters a lot. The books widen from personal survival into rebellion, war, ancient forces, and the question of whether the whole vampire order can be broken at all. The romance keeps the tension personal, but the stakes keep growing beyond any one couple.

Readers who like vampire stories with a stronger dystopian frame, sister dynamics, and a full-series conflict bigger than a single love story will probably find a lot to work with here. It is darker than some YA-feeling vampire fiction and more openly political than many paranormal romances.
