The Gladiator/The Eagles Books in Order

The Gladiator, published in Britain as The Eagles, is a short run of Roman adventure novels written under the shared Andrew Quiller name. Laurence James, Kenneth Bulmer, and Angus Wells each contributed to the five-book sequence, but the central character and his unfinished business carry it forward.

That character is Marcus Julius Britannicus, a half-Roman, half-British soldier who becomes the famous gladiator Vulpus the Fox. In the arena he is a crowd favorite, known for surviving fights that should finish him. Away from it, he is a man shaped by military service, family ties, old loyalties, and a need to settle a deeply personal score.

The stories begin from the public life of Vulpus, then often turn back to Marcus's earlier campaigns and missions.

In The Hill of the Dead, a confrontation in the Colosseum sends Marcus back to the siege of Masada and his friendship with Samuel ben Ezra. The Land of Mist moves to Britain, his mother's homeland, where Marcus searches for Roman officers connected to a family atrocity. The personal hunt continues through City of Fire, which takes him to Pompeii as Mount Vesuvius becomes an immediate threat.

Blood on the Sand looks back at how Marcus entered the emperor's service as a gladiator while bringing his long-running revenge plot toward its end. The final book, Sea of Swords, sends him on a new imperial assignment into the Carpathian Mountains, where a rescue mission pits him against a brutal local ruler.

Rome matters here, but these aren't quiet novels of senatorial debate. The setting is full of legions, fortresses, racing crowds, brothels, volcanic ash, and political orders that can become deadly fast. The tone is blunt and action-heavy, with violence and adult material that fit the rougher side of 1970s historical adventure paperbacks.

Marcus is not simply an arena fighter.

He works as a soldier, charioteer, agent, and reluctant participant in the emperor's plans. That range gives the series room to move from Judea and Britain to Italy and beyond, while the gladiator frame keeps reminding readers what Marcus has become. Start with The Hill of the Dead and continue in order, since each book adds context to his friendships, family history, and revenge quest.
