Series background & context

The Gladiator series is written for younger readers but doesn’t shy away from hard choices and sharp blades. The books follow Marcus Cornelius Primus, a farm boy in 61 BC whose life is smashed apart in a single raid.

Marcus’s father, a retired centurion, is murdered by corrupt soldiers, and his mother is dragged back into slavery. Marcus himself is sold to a gladiator school, where brutal training, harsh discipline and casual cruelty are part of everyday life. His only real weapons at first are stubbornness and a burning sense of injustice.

In Fight for Freedom Marcus struggles to survive the ludus, learning to fight with sword, spear and his bare hands while clinging to the hope of rescuing his mother. Along the way he discovers a dangerous secret about his own past that links him to Spartacus and the great slave rebellion.

Later books push him out of the arena and into the streets and palaces of Rome. In Street Fighter he is drawn into gang wars and a plot against Julius Caesar, working undercover in a city where a wrong move can be fatal. Son of Spartacus and Vengeance carry him across the Mediterranean, torn between loyalty to Caesar and to old allies among the rebel slaves, always with his mother’s fate in the background.

Throughout the series the tone stays fast and clear, with frequent action but also strong friendships and moments of humour. Marcus grows from frightened boy to capable fighter, but the books keep reminding you that he is still young, making decisions under pressure in a dangerous world.

For readers who like history with plenty of swordplay, the Gladiator novels offer a clear route into late Republican Rome, with real figures such as Caesar and Pompey appearing alongside fictional trainers, rivals and friends.
