Andrew Quiller Books in Order

Andrew Quiller wasn't one person. It was a shared pen name used by British paperback writers Laurence James, Kenneth Bulmer, and Angus Wells for a five-book run of Roman historical adventures. The books appeared as The Gladiator in the United States and The Eagles in Britain.

That kind of shared byline was common in fast-moving paperback publishing. It let a publisher build a recognizable series identity while different writers took turns telling connected adventures. In this case, the continuing hero is Marcus Julius Britannicus, also known in the arena as Vulpus the Fox.

Kenneth Bulmer, born in London in 1921 and raised around Catford, was one of the most productive members of the group. He wrote science fiction, historical adventures, westerns, and television tie-ins under many names, with the long-running Dray Prescot adventures among his best-known work. For the Quiller books, he wrote The Land of Mist and Sea of Swords.

Laurence James came to writing after working in several jobs and then in paperback publishing. He became a full-time freelance writer and journalist in 1972, and later wrote in science fiction, adventure, and post-apocalyptic fiction under a range of names. His Quiller entries were The Hill of the Dead and Blood on the Sand.

Angus Wells was born in a small village in Kent and worked as a publicist and an editor of science fiction and fantasy before writing full time. He later became known for fantasy series including the Kingdoms books and the Godwars novels. His contribution to the Quiller run was City of Fire.

The three writers had different backgrounds, but the series keeps a clear through line. Marcus is half Roman and half Briton, a soldier with ties to the imperial world who becomes a celebrated gladiator. He is tough, impulsive, and driven by a personal debt of blood. The books use ancient Rome not as a museum piece, but as a place of arenas, military campaigns, court business, and dangerous travel.

The first novel, The Hill of the Dead, places Vulpus in the Colosseum and sends the story back to Masada, where a familiar face turns a fight into a moral test. The Land of Mist takes Marcus to Britain and deepens his revenge quest. In City of Fire, that hunt leads him toward Pompeii as Vesuvius threatens to erupt. Blood on the Sand fills in how he became the emperor's champion and brings the main pursuit toward a close.

These are lean, adult historical adventures built around movement and danger. Expect sword fights, military action, vengeance plots, and a hero who is often pulled between Roman duty and personal loyalty.

Sea of Swords closes the sequence with a new imperial mission beyond Rome's familiar streets and arenas. Read in publication order for the clearest view of Marcus's past, his rise as Vulpus, and the relationships that follow him from one crisis to the next.
