Author bio
Cynthia Harrod-Eagles was born in 1948 in Shepherd’s Bush, London, and she grew up in the city. She’s written across crime, historical fiction, romance, and even short stories, but she tends to come back to the same things, family pressure, private secrets, and the way big events ripple through ordinary lives.
She went to Burlington School, and later studied English, history, and philosophy at the University of Edinburgh and University College London. That mix of subjects shows up in her fiction, she likes ideas, but she also likes the details that make a time and place feel real. Harrod-Eagles started young, and her first novel, The Waiting Game, won a Young Writer’s Award in 1972.
Before writing became her full-time job, she worked in the commercial world and did a grab bag of roles. Over the years she’s talked about jobs ranging from sales work to office posts, including time connected with the BBC. In 1979 she switched to writing full time.
She has never stuck to one shelf.
In 1980 she launched what would become her biggest project, The Morland Dynasty. It begins with The Founding and follows one family through English history, generation by generation, as the country shifts around them. The books move from the Wars of the Roses through the Tudors and Stuarts, on into the Industrial Revolution, and eventually into the twentieth century. At the center is the tension between private life, who you marry, what you inherit, what you keep quiet, and public life, war, politics, and changing rules.
She later created a very different kind of long-running series with the Bill Slider mysteries, starting with Orchestrated Death in 1991. Slider is a working detective in West London, and the books lean into procedure, interviews, dead ends, sudden breakthroughs, and the small human moments that happen in the middle of a case. The crimes range from quick shocks to slow-burn puzzles, but the focus stays on people, what they hide, and what finally gives them away.
London is one of her recurring characters.
Her other historical work often zooms in on a tighter group. The War at Home novels track the First World War year by year, showing how the conflict reshapes friendships, jobs, and expectations as much as it reshapes maps. The Ashmore Castle books take an upstairs-downstairs look at an Edwardian household, where family drama and servant life collide under one roof. And in the Kirov Trilogy (Anna, Fleur, Emily), she shifts the lens to Imperial Russia, ending with Emily, which won the Romantic Novel of the Year award from the Romantic Novelists’ Association.
She’s also published under the names Emma Woodhouse and Elizabeth Bennett, particularly for some of her romances. Across all those pen names, a few patterns keep popping up, smart heroines, complicated love stories, and settings that matter as much as the plot. She’s written standalone novels too, from contemporary relationship dramas to eerie, idea-driven stories like Hollow Night. She doesn’t only write novels, either, Real Life is a collection of short stories that starts with everyday situations, commuting, house-hunting, family rows, and then quietly tilts into something stranger. And she’s written for younger readers as well, including Henry and Friends.
Harrod-Eagles lives in London. She’s married, has three children, and has spoken about interests that include music, gardening, horses, wine, and the English countryside.
