Series background & context

The End of Everything follows two sisters, Wren and Robyn, as a reanimating virus tears through the United Kingdom. Before the outbreak they could barely stand to be in the same room. Once the dead start getting back up, their survival depends on each other.

The series begins in a city under siege. Sirens, gunshots, and news bulletins blur together as the authorities lose control. Wren is the focused, practical one, a crossbow on her back and a plan forming even when she is terrified. Robyn is more impulsive and emotional, less ready to accept that the world they knew has vanished. Forced out of their home, they have to navigate streets clogged with wrecked cars, shambling RAMs, and desperate survivors who may be more dangerous than the undead.

Early on, their journey is about simple goals: reach higher ground, find food, figure out where to sleep without getting killed. As the books progress, the scope widens. They meet other survivors, some of whom become vital allies and others who show how ugly people can get when law and consequence disappear. Wren and Robyn are pushed into leadership roles they never wanted, weighing whose lives to risk and what lines they will not cross.

A big part of the appeal here is the relationship between the sisters. Their banter, arguments, and fiercely protective instincts give the grim setting a very human core. They tease each other, fight bitterly, and still throw themselves into danger when the other is at risk. The apocalypse does not magically fix their flaws; it just makes those flaws matter a lot more.

As they move north through a ruined Britain, the sisters walk into a web of larger conflicts. Survivor enclaves clash. Ruthless commanders build mini‑empires from the wreckage. Technology and old power structures are repurposed for control. The RAMs are always a threat in the background, but the real tension often comes from humans competing for the last scraps of security.

The series also overlaps with the wider Safe Haven universe. Names and places from Mike Fletcher’s story echo through Wren and Robyn’s path, and later books bring those threads closer together. Fans who read both series see different angles on the same battles and hear familiar rumours from new mouths.

Across fourteen books, The End of Everything stays fast and tense but keeps its heart in the right place. It is about two ordinary young women figuring out who they want to be when every decision might get someone killed, and about the fragile communities that grow up when the old world falls apart.
