Author bio

Christopher Artinian was born and raised in Leeds, West Yorkshire, where city streets, late-night horror films, and a steady diet of thrillers helped shape the kind of stories he would one day write. In 2004 he left the city behind and moved to the Outer Hebrides in the north-west of Scotland, trading traffic and office lights for rough seas, big skies, and a slower pace of life with his wife and their dogs.

That move was about more than scenery. He wanted to work to live rather than live to work, and the islands gave him the space to do it. Between shifts and everyday life he kept scribbling ideas about outbreaks, bunkers, and ordinary people pushed into impossible choices. Those notes eventually became his debut novel, Safe Haven: Rise of the Rams, a post-apocalyptic zombie story about a Leeds family trying to reach the far north of Scotland as the world collapses.

The book landed with readers who liked their zombie fiction fast but grounded in family ties. It went on to win a Zombie Book of the Month award and earned him a Best New Author nod from a community of genre writers. More Safe Haven novels followed, charting Mike and Emma Fletcher’s attempt to build a fragile sanctuary in a world filled with brutal raiders, government failures, and the fast, relentless infected known as RAMs.

While he was writing the fourth Safe Haven novel, Ice, a new character walked onto the page: Wren, a crossbow-carrying teenager on a rooftop in Inverness. She refused to stay in the background, and her appearance sparked a companion series, The End of Everything. Those books follow Wren and her sister, Robyn, across a devastated Britain, mixing sharp, funny sisterly bickering with hard-edged survival, moral grey areas, and the slow realisation that they might have to lead as well as endure.

As the universe grew, Artinian began filling in the gaps. The Before Safe Haven novellas give key characters their own spotlight, showing Lucy, Alex, Mike, and Jules in the days when the virus first reached the UK and everything still felt like a bad rumour. Later, the Unsafe series arrived, starting with a father and son, Deano and BD, who are forced to trust each other for the first time when the infection finally tears through a supposedly safe Britain.

Not all of his work is set in the zombie outbreak. With the Relentless trilogy he leaned into pure survival horror. One book strands Sal and her friends in a forest where they are hunted for sport, another traps a rock band on a nightmare island, and a third follows a mother and her children pursued by almost spectral hunters. The monsters are not always undead, but the fear, urgency, and dark humour will feel familiar to his longtime readers.

The Burning Tree series shifts again, into a post-asteroid dystopia. It begins in the underground bunker complex of Salvation, where people on the lowest level realise they were saved only to be used as a disposable workforce. When disaster hits, Callie and her friends fight their way toward the surface and into a shattered world, eventually helping to build a settlement called Redemption and defending it against the cold, the scarcity, and the people who want to seize control.

Alongside the big series he writes stand-alone horror. Night of the Demons strands a young family on a remote Scottish island where a blizzard, buried secrets, and an old legend turn a fresh start into a long night of terror. The Devil’s Face follows Levon Stoll, a sound man on a haunted house documentary whose latest job in a Tennessee town called New Scotland drags him into something far worse than faked scares. Madhouse pushes into splatterpunk territory as a teacher and her students are cut off by a storm and discover that the real danger is already in the woods with them.

Across all of these worlds, certain threads repeat. Families—by blood or by choice—sit at the centre of the story. People argue, crack jokes, freeze up, and step up. Settings range from Leeds streets to Hebridean islands, underground bunkers, ruined cities, and lonely farmsteads, but the focus stays tight on how ordinary people respond when safety vanishes overnight.

Artinian still lives in the Outer Hebrides, writing about ruined worlds from a place that looks wild enough to host one. Many of his books are available as audiobooks, brought to life by narrator Kim Bretton, whose performances have become part of the draw for fans. Between zombies, asteroids, supernatural hunts, and haunted houses, he shows no sign of running out of new ways to put his characters—and readers—through the wringer.
