The Dukes of Darkness Books in Order

The Dukes of Darkness books lean moodier than some of Anna Harrington's earlier series, and that is part of their appeal. These heroes are not polished young peers coming of age. They are former mercenaries, four close friends who return to London hoping for a quieter future and instead end up with dukedoms, responsibilities, and old enemies catching up to them.

The series works because it never lets the titles smooth away the men's rough edges. They know how to survive danger, but they are much less prepared for polite society, family history, and the way old rumors can harden into public truth. Each book asks some version of the same question, what happens when a man has remade himself once already and the past still refuses to stay buried?

The Duke and the Darkness opens with a classic Gothic spark. Devlin Raines has nearly rebuilt his family's name when Peyton Chandler, a woman long thought dead, returns believing he destroyed her life. Their story is full of suspicion, revenge, and shifting loyalties. The Duke of Deceit then turns to Lucien Grenier, a hero who hides whatever goodness he has behind a carefully crafted wicked reputation, only to meet a heroine determined to expose him.

The later books deepen the emotional side of the series. The Duke's Only Desire is all about interrupted first love, an old marriage contract, and a man accused of terrible things after a family tragedy. The Devil's Own Duke brings in grief and long memory, following a widowed duke who returns home planning to leave again and the woman who has loved him much longer than he realizes. Across all four books, loss is never far away, but neither is the possibility of repair.

One nice thing about this series is that the friendship among the four men never disappears. Even when each romance narrows to one couple, you still feel the old loyalty underneath it. That gives the books weight. These are not isolated dukes wandering around separate estates. They are men who have seen each other at their worst and still show up when it matters.

If you like your Regency romance a little darker, with hidden histories, scarred heroes, stubborn heroines, and an atmosphere that edges toward Gothic without leaving the genre, this is a rewarding series. Read it in order for the best effect. The shared past, the returning secrets, and the gradual sense of these men building new lives all land better that way.
