The Conqueror's Saga is Kiersten White's dark historical fantasy trilogy, beginning with And I Darken. It takes inspiration from the life and era of Vlad Dracul, but changes the central premise: Vlad is Lada, a girl born into a world that sees her as a problem because she is fierce, angry, and unwilling to be managed.

Lada and her gentle younger brother Radu are sent from Wallachia to the Ottoman court as political hostages. Their father hopes the arrangement will protect his own position, but for the children it means growing up far from home among people who may be allies, captors, or both. Lada wants power and a path back to Wallachia. Radu wants a place where he can belong.

At court, they meet Mehmed, the heir to the Ottoman throne. The friendship, rivalry, affection, and ambition among the three become the heart of the series. Each of them wants something different from the future, and their choices pull them toward political conflict as the Ottoman Empire expands.

And I Darken follows the siblings from childhood into young adulthood, showing how life at court shapes them. Now I Rise widens the story as Lada returns to Wallachia to claim authority, while Radu's loyalty to Mehmed and his faith lead him down a different road. Neither sibling gets an easy answer, and the books do not pretend that love or family can erase their opposing goals.

The final volume, Bright We Burn, brings the major conflicts to a head. Lada, Radu, and Mehmed must reckon with the empires, armies, and promises that have defined their lives. The series draws on real historical tensions, including warfare, religion, succession, and the pressure placed on people used as political tools, while telling an alternate-history story rather than a strict biography.

Expect a serious, violent, emotionally intense fantasy. Lada is not written as a polished or easy heroine. She can be cruel, stubborn, and frighteningly focused, but her determination gives the trilogy its force. Radu offers a quieter counterpoint, with his own complicated hopes and loyalties.
