Author bio
Kiersten White grew up in Utah, at the foot of a mountain, and has long described herself as a reader first. When books were unavailable, or when a favorite story ended too soon, she made up new ones in her head. Writing became a natural next step.
She once imagined illustrating books, too. She eventually decided that drawing was not her strongest skill, so she put her energy into the stories instead.
White spent years writing before her first novel reached shelves. She queried several earlier projects, including what she has called a very boring middle-grade manuscript, before finding her agent after writing another novel. Paranormalcy was actually her fourth completed novel, but it became her publishing debut in 2010.
That book introduced Evie, a teen who works for the International Paranormal Containment Agency and can see through supernatural disguises. Its mix of monsters, romance, jokes, and a heroine who wants an ordinary life set the pattern for many White books: familiar genre ingredients, then a sharp left turn into something stranger.
Her work moves easily between age groups and genres. The Paranormalcy trilogy is playful paranormal YA. And I Darken, followed by Now I Rise and Bright We Burn, reimagines the history of Vlad Dracul by making its fierce central ruler a girl named Lada. The Camelot Rising books put Guinevere at the center of an Arthurian world full of magic, secrets, and competing ideas about what Camelot should be.
She also enjoys taking well-known stories apart and looking at the people pushed to their edges. The Dark Descent of Elizabeth Frankenstein follows Elizabeth Lavenza, Victor Frankenstein's childhood companion, while Lucy Undying gives Dracula's early victim Lucy Westenra a long, dangerous life of her own. Readers often come to White for that interest in girls and women who are told who they should be, then refuse to stay in the role assigned to them.
Sometimes the monsters are very literal. Hide traps desperate contestants in a deadly game at an abandoned amusement park, and Mister Magic reunites former child performers with the unsettling television show that shaped their lives. Both books use horror to ask what people will give up for belonging, safety, or a chance to rewrite the past.
White writes for younger readers, too. Her Sinister Summer books follow Theo and Alexander Sinister-Winterbottom through odd vacation spots, missing-parent mysteries, and a great many suspicious adults. She has also written Padawan, a coming-of-age Star Wars adventure about young Obi-Wan Kenobi.
Her books have appeared on bestseller lists, and she has received a Bram Stoker Award. Still, the through line is simple: White likes stories with big feelings, unnerving questions, dark humor, and characters who keep going when the sensible thing might be to run.
She lives in San Diego with her family and a sulcata tortoise named Kimberly. The tortoise, by White's account, has a lot of attitude.
