Blue Angel

by Jamie Brenner

2026

Mallory Dale is a rule follower with a steady job and longtime boyfriend, until a birthday trip to Manhattan’s burlesque club the Blue Angel pulls her onstage. As star performer Bette Noir lures her deeper behind the curtain, Mallory tests the limits of desire, performance, and her relationship.

Series background & context

The Burlesque Trilogy follows Mallory Dale, a young paralegal whose carefully ordered life in New York City is upended when her longtime boyfriend, Alec, casually asks if she has ever thought about a threesome. That offhand question leads to a birthday trip to a buzzy burlesque club called the Blue Angel, where the lights, music, and charged energy onstage ignite a part of Mallory she did not know was waiting.

By day Mallory files briefs at a high powered Manhattan law firm and imagines a traditional future with Alec. At night, after the visit to the club, she finds herself drawn back to the Blue Angel as a student and then as a performer. Under the guidance of its magnetic star, Bette Noir, Mallory learns the language of burlesque, from choosing a stage name and costume to discovering how it feels to command a room with a single gesture.

The series leans into the tension between Mallory’s buttoned up world and the sensual freedom she finds onstage. Alec pushes her sexual boundaries, sometimes in ways that thrill her and sometimes in ways that leave her unsure whose fantasies are really being served. Fellow dancers, including a fiercely confident dominatrix, tempt Mallory to experiment further while also forcing her to ask what kind of intimacy she actually wants.

At the same time, her day job grows more complicated. A charismatic boss begins to notice her, blurring lines between professional ambition and personal desire. Mallory juggles late nights at the club, early mornings at the office, and a relationship that no longer fits neatly into the good girl script she once trusted.

Across the trilogy the stakes rise with every performance. Mallory’s world expands from one downtown stage to a broader burlesque community, complete with rivalries, friendships, and the grind of building an act that can stand out. The more success she finds as a performer, the more urgent her choices become offstage: whether to stay with Alec, whether to put career ahead of art, and how open she wants to be about the life she is building in sequins and spotlights.

What keeps the books grounded is the emotional through line. Beneath the explicit scenes and provocative setups, the story is about a woman redefining confidence, pleasure, and partnership on her own terms. The backstage camaraderie, rehearsal mishaps, and post show debriefs show burlesque not just as titillation but as an art form where performers can reclaim their bodies and write their own stories.

Read in order, starting with Blue Angel and continuing with Fallen Angel before the final volume, the trilogy lets you walk beside Mallory as she figures out how much of herself she is willing to reveal, and to whom.
