Series background & context

The Darkest Sunset story follows Charlotte Mills and Porter Reese through grief, loss, and a relationship that begins when neither of them is ready to believe in hope. The core duet is The Darkest Sunrise and The Brightest Sunset, which should be read in order. Across the Horizon is a connected standalone set in the same world, but it can be read before or after the duet without spoiling it.

Charlotte's life is defined by words she cannot forget. She has experienced pregnancy, her son's severe illness, and devastating loss. Ten years later, the grief is still part of everything she does. Porter enters her life with his own darkness and a directness that disrupts the protective distance she has built around herself.

Their meeting is not a magic fix.

The Darkest Sunrise is about two people trying to make room for each other while carrying pain that feels permanent. Charlotte is wary, angry, and deeply changed by what happened to her family. Porter is not presented as someone who can save her from grief. Instead, he becomes someone willing to stand beside her as the past catches up with them.

The Brightest Sunset continues the same couple's story and gives Porter a stronger voice. His losses and anger are just as real as Charlotte's, and the relationship has to hold under new pressure. The title points toward hope, but this is still a story about people who have to face what has hurt them rather than look away.

It is an emotional duet with suspense around the edges.

The linked standalone, Across the Horizon, follows celebrity chef Tanner Reese and Rita. Tanner steps in when Rita discovers her husband's affair, and their unexpected connection grows despite the gap between his public life and her desire for a quieter reset. It shares characters and atmosphere with the duet, but its romance stands on its own.

Start with The Darkest Sunrise, then read The Brightest Sunset for Charlotte and Porter's full arc. Add Across the Horizon whenever you want a lighter, separate romance in the same setting. Across all three books, the emphasis is on rebuilding a life after loss, with complicated families, old secrets, and hard-earned tenderness along the way.
