Barney adores working his family's Yorkshire Wolds farm but long days and early starts make finding love feel impossible. Series background & context
The Bumblebee Barn Collection is a spin off from the Hedgehog Hollow books, moving a little further across the Yorkshire Wolds to a cluster of farms and cottages where animals, family ties and second chances are at the centre of everything. Although the stories stand alone, familiar faces from Hedgehog Hollow wander in and out, giving long time readers an extra layer of enjoyment.
In Healing Hearts at Bumblebee Barn, we meet Barney, a young farmer who loves the land his family have worked for generations but is painfully aware that he is facing early mornings and muddy quad bike rides alone. His sister Fizz, keen for him to find someone who sees beyond his work clothes, signs him up for a reality TV show that helps farmers look for love. Barney expects nothing to come of it, only to find cameras, buried secrets and unexpected feelings turning his quiet life upside down. The book blends the fun of a television set up with a thoughtful look at privacy, vulnerability and what really matters when the spotlight switches off.
A New Dawn at Owl's Lodge widens the focus to nearby Owl's Lodge, where reclusive single dad Snowy spends his days home schooling his son and caring for injured owls. He has deliberately stepped away from the wider world and is not thrilled when Zara, a producer's assistant from the city, turns up on his doorstep with an injured bird and questions he does not want to answer. Zara, who lives out of suitcases while filming TV shows and feels increasingly rootless, is equally wary of getting attached. Their shared care for the owls slowly nudges them out of their self imposed isolation.
In A Forever Home at Honey Bee Croft, single father Joel Grainger is doing his best to stay a steady presence for his young daughter Imogen while her mother makes co parenting difficult and his job security wobbles. Poppy Wells, exhausted from supporting a beloved dad with dementia, accepts a much needed break at Whisperwood Farmhouse, a holiday cottage a short walk from Bumblebee Barn. At Honey Bee Croft and its surroundings she begins to breathe again, meet new friends and imagine a life that is not defined only by responsibility. When her path crosses Joel's, their instant connection is tempered by the practical obstacles standing in the way of a shared future.
Across the trilogy, readers can expect sweeping Wolds countryside, working farms, hedgehogs and owls, alongside themes of caregiving, single parenthood, grief and learning to let other people in. The tone is warm and hopeful, with plenty of rural detail and gentle humour, and the books offer a satisfying way to stay in the wider Hedgehog Hollow universe while following new protagonists.
