Virgil MacGregor thought he had left Glasgow’s underworld behind, but when his brothers sign up with ruthless queenpin Toni McVay and chaos reaches his doorstep, he is dragged back into a bloody fight to protect his family and estranged wife Ember.
Series background & context
The Bloody MacGregors are Heather Atkinson’s answer to the classic hard-hitting Glasgow crime family. First introduced in Fury, they are a clan known across the city for building their power with bare fists and broken rules. Grudges are remembered, respect is demanded and anyone who crosses them tends not to get a second chance.
At the start of the series, Virgil MacGregor is the one who got out. Sick of violence and bloodshed, he walked away from the family and tried to build a quieter life. For a while, he manages it. But trouble is not finished with him. His brothers have gone to work for Toni McVay, the ruthless “Queen of Glasgow” from other Atkinson series, and the chaos they stir up spills straight onto Virgil’s doorstep.
Dragged back into the game, Virgil finds himself trying to keep a lid on street wars, police interest and internal family tensions all at once. Making things even harder is his fiery estranged wife Ember, who has her own scores to settle and no patience for his desire to stay out of the fray. Old wounds between them reopen just as enemies begin to close in.
The books balance large scale gangland manoeuvring with very intimate conflicts. Virgil is torn between loyalty to the brothers he grew up with, the need to protect innocent people caught in the crossfire and a desperate wish not to become the man he used to be. The rest of the MacGregors are equally vivid – some vile, some oddly sympathetic, all shaped by the brutal environment they were raised in.
For readers who already know Atkinson’s Glasgow from the Gallowburn and Savage Sisters series, The Bloody MacGregors offer another angle on the city’s underworld. They are ideal if you like crime fiction built around one extended family where love, hate and survival are hopelessly tangled together.
