Series background & context

The Gallowburn series marks Heather Atkinson’s move into traditionally published gangland fiction with Boldwood Books, and it is set on the fictional Gallowburn housing estate on the outskirts of Glasgow. Life on the estate is hard, money is scarce and reputation is everything. Families who have lived there for generations know exactly which streets are safe, which pubs to avoid and whose name carries weight.

At the centre of the first book, Blood Brothers, are four lifelong friends – Jamie Gray, Digger Barrie, Gary and Logan McVitie – known around the estate as the Blood Brothers. They control the north side of Gallowburn and have long been at odds with their rivals, the Lawsons, a larger crew who are hungry for more territory. When a mobile phone packed with incriminating material goes missing after a clash, blame falls on Jamie’s group and the feud threatens to explode into all out war.

Jamie’s mother, Jackie, adds another layer to the story. She is every bit as hard as the men, fiercely protective of her son and quite prepared to wade into trouble herself. Yet she also dreams of a better life for him and sees a glimmer of that possibility when Jamie meets Allegra, a wealthy young woman caught shoplifting from the local shop where he works. Their unlikely connection tests the idea that someone from Gallowburn can ever truly leave it behind.

Subsequent books, including Bad Blood, Blood Ties and Blood Pact, widen the conflict. Old scores within the community resurface, outside crime figures try to muscle in and the estate becomes a battleground where loyalty can be as dangerous as betrayal. Atkinson uses the series to explore how poverty, pride and love for your own can trap people in cycles of violence they did not start but feel they must finish.

Gallowburn is ideal for readers who like tight-knit communities, fierce matriarchs and young men trying – and often failing – to carve out a future that does not end with a prison cell or a grave.
