Assassin-for-hire Raven sees her reputation shredded when a rival steals her contracts and a sadistic torturer and neo-Nazi meth crew come hunting for her, all while her beloved husband Aidan has been missing for nearly a year.
Series background & context
The Raven books follow one of Heather Atkinson’s most striking protagonists: a lone assassin navigating a violent criminal underworld that would gladly see her dead. Known simply as Raven, she earns a living as an assassin for hire and as a bounty hunter, taking contracts from rival gang bosses while trying to enforce her own rules about who deserves to die.
When the series opens, Raven’s carefully maintained reputation is under attack. A rival killer has started stealing her contracts and completing them in ways that draw unwanted attention, making it look as though she is losing her edge. At the same time, a gang of neo-Nazi meth dealers and a sadistic torturer with an eye on her intricate raven-feather tattoos decide she would make an excellent trophy.
Her personal life is no safer. Raven’s adored husband Aidan, himself no stranger to danger, has been missing for almost a year. She does not know whether he is dead, imprisoned or playing some deeper game. That uncertainty gnaws at her as she moves through safe houses, seedy bars and criminal meet-ups, never quite sure who she can trust.
The books mix hard-edged action with emotional stakes. Fight scenes are brutal and inventive, drawing on the homemade gadgets passed down from Raven’s mentor as well as straightforward gunplay and blades. Between those set pieces, Atkinson digs into what it means to be a woman who has turned herself into a weapon, and what it costs to keep caring about people in a world where attachment is a weakness.
If you like assassin thrillers with a strong, damaged lead, a sense of dark humour and plenty of enemies closing in, the Raven series offers that in a distinct voice separate from the author’s family-based gangland sagas.
