Series background & context
Hollywood Vampire, also known as The A-List series, is Heather Atkinson’s foray into full-blooded paranormal romance. At its heart is Eva Gallo, a world-famous actress whose flawless public image hides a secret that would shock her adoring fans – she is a powerful vampire, turned against her will long ago and now trying to carve out some kind of moral code in a city built on illusion.
In Shadow Lives the carefully controlled world Eva has built shatters when her human husband is murdered. The killer is Alex, her maker, a psychotic vampire who has haunted her existence for centuries. Driven by grief and rage, she heads back to Los Angeles on a revenge mission, only to find herself in the sights of the Hoplites, an ancient order of vampire slayers descended from Spartan warriors. To get to Alex she must strike an uneasy bargain with the very people sworn to destroy her.
The books that follow push Eva deeper into the politics of both vampires and slayers. She fights alongside a phalanx of Hoplites, becomes entangled with Patrick, the loyal warrior she should not love, and crosses paths with vampire celebrities and ancient monsters. Later instalments introduce Rhesus, one of the oldest and most dangerous vampires in existence, whose plans threaten to ignite a full-scale war between undead and hunters.
Atkinson leans into the contrasts that setting allows. Glittering premieres sit beside blood-soaked back alleys. Characters wrestle with genuine moral questions about power, immortality and consent while still delivering all the romantic tension, jealousy and heartbreak that fans of the genre expect.
Across four tightly linked books, Hollywood Vampire tells one overarching story about a woman trying to keep hold of her humanity while the world demands she pick a side. Readers who like fast-paced urban fantasy with strong romance, intricate supernatural politics and a heroine who refuses to be tamed will find plenty here.
