The Banks Sisters

by Nikki Turner

2015

Four very different Banks sisters share one thing, their love for their grandmother Me-Ma and the home she raised them in. After Me-Ma’s sudden death and a shocking will, the broke sisters turn to a risky bank-robbing scheme to save the house and their lives.

Series background & context

The Banks Sisters series is a heist‑driven family saga about four women who share blood, a beloved grandmother, and a talent for making desperate moves. At the start of the first book, the sisters—who can barely stand one another—are all living under the same roof with Me‑Ma, the grandmother who has held the family together for years.

When Me‑Ma suffers a heart attack at church, the sisters assume at least the house will be theirs. Instead, they learn she left everything to the church. Suddenly they are broke, grieving, and facing eviction from the only stable home they have ever known. On top of that, Bunny already owes over a hundred thousand dollars to a dangerous man who is running out of patience.

Backed into a corner, the Banks sisters hatch a plan that would terrify most people: they start robbing banks. What begins as one wild attempt to get quick money turns into a run of high‑risk heists that puts them squarely in the sights of local law enforcement. As they try to pay off debts and buy back Me‑Ma’s house, the women butt heads over everything from strategy to who is really in charge.

The second book throws even more fuel on the fire. Their estranged mother shows up, demanding a cut and threatening to snitch if she does not get what she wants. Pastor Cassius Street, who controls the deed to Me‑Ma’s house, proves slipperier than they expected. A detective who happens to be romantically linked to one of the sisters inches closer to the truth about the robberies and the bodies piling up in their wake.

By the time The Banks Sisters 3 rolls around, the women are neck‑deep in consequences. Old alliances fracture as each sister weighs whether to protect herself or stand with the family. Long‑buried secrets surface, and it becomes clear that they are not just fighting the law but their own worst impulses.

Throughout the trilogy, Turner keeps the tone fast and intense but never lets readers forget that this is a story about family as much as crime. The Banks sisters might be "rotten to the core" in some of their choices, yet their loyalty to Me‑Ma and the home she built for them runs deep.

Readers who follow the series in order get to watch the sisters evolve from four women forced to share a house into a crew that has to decide, again and again, whether blood really is thicker than money.
