A Project Chick

by Nikki Turner

2003

Tressa has built her identity around the designer clothes and easy money her possessive boyfriend Lucky provides. After one betrayal too many, she walks away with only her street smarts, struggling through hard times and messy relationships to protect her child.

Series background & context

The Project Chick series centers on Tressa, a young woman who has built her life around the luxe, chaotic world of an abusive hustler and then has to figure out who she is once she walks away. In the beginning, Tressa is a "fly girl" in every sense, dressed in mink and diamonds and living off the money her possessive boyfriend Lucky brings in from the streets.

In A Project Chick, the high life has a price. Lucky’s jealousy, violence, and mind games keep Tressa trapped, even as she excuses behavior that would have sent her running if she had less to lose. When he finally crosses a line she cannot ignore, she leaves it all behind, taking nothing but her street savvy and determination. Her new reality is the opposite of glamorous, switching from VIP treatment to public assistance, cramped apartments, and endless drama with exes and toxic friends.

The first novel reads like a survival manual for a single mother trying to rebuild from scratch. Tressa scrambles to keep a roof over her head and food on the table, all while sorting through a rotation of men who are either not ready, not honest, or simply not worth the headache. Turner leans into the grind of day‑to‑day life, showing how easy it is to slip back into bad patterns when you are tired, broke, and still healing.

Project Chick II: What's Done in the Dark jumps ahead to the lives of Tressa’s twin sons, Khalil and Hadji. She thinks the worst is behind them, especially after hearing that Lucky is dead. But when the boys discover that Indie, the man who stepped up and raised them, had a hand in their father’s death, old secrets explode into new violence. Their thirst for revenge threatens everything Tressa has fought to build.

Together, the two books trace how cycles of abuse and street justice can echo from one generation to the next. Tressa is constantly pulled between protecting her children, owning the choices she made with Lucky, and refusing to let the past define their future.

The Project Chick series is for readers who like character‑driven drama where the stakes feel personal: not just who lives or dies, but whether a woman can ever really start over when the people around her are still living by the old rules.
