The Aurelian Cycle Books in Order

The Aurelian Cycle is a completed young adult fantasy trilogy about what happens after a revolution wins. In Callipolis, the old ruling class used dragons to keep its power, until a violent uprising brought it down. The new government promises that any child, whatever their birth, can earn a place through testing and training. It is a hopeful idea, but it is also a system under pressure from the start.

At the center are Annie and Lee, two dragon riders who grew up together in an orphanage. Annie comes from a lowborn family destroyed by the old regime's dragonfire. Lee was born into one of the ruling dragonlord families, whose members were killed during the revolution. They care deeply about each other, but their histories give them very different reasons to distrust the people now in charge.

The first book, Fireborne, finds them competing for the role of Firstrider while exiles from the old order gather strength nearby. Dragons are not just companions in this world. They are military weapons, political symbols, and a reminder of the damage power can do when too few people control it.

The war is never only about territory.

As the series continues through Flamefall and Furysong, the conflict widens beyond Annie and Lee's rivalry. Food shortages, rebellion, invasion, and old class divisions force characters on every side to decide what justice looks like when no option is clean. A new perspective from the enemy-held island of New Pythos also makes the struggle feel larger and more complicated.

These books balance dragon flights and aerial battles with close attention to friendship, grief, romance, and difficult leadership. Annie wants to protect Callipolis without becoming the kind of ruler she fears. Lee has to work out whether loyalty to people he loves can fit with loyalty to a city built on his family's ruin.
