Series background & context

The 3rd Freak House Trilogy shifts the Freak House setting further into overt paranormal romance while keeping its Victorian framing and emphasis on damaged, determined characters. Instead of strange inventions or hypnosis, the central problem is a curse that is slowly killing the heroine.

In Ghost Girl, Cara Moreau is marked by a supernatural curse she barely understands. The only person who can keep her alive is Quin St Clair, a warrior from a realm that exists “in between” life and death. Quin once lived centuries ago and now exists solely to guard the boundary between worlds. That is all he is willing to tell Cara at first.

Their connection is physical and immediate. The curse pulls energy from Quin, so he must stay close to Cara to keep her stable, sharing space and small domestic moments as well as outright danger. As they search for a book of spells that might hold a cure, Cara pushes for answers about the man assigned to protect her, and Quin fights his growing attachment to someone he may lose.

Banished raises the stakes when an infestation of malevolent ghosts overruns the grounds of Freak House. Even for Cara, whose curse leaves her sensitive to the dead, the surge is overwhelming. She calls Quin back, and together they track where the spirits came from and why they will not move on. Their investigations pull in familiar faces from earlier trilogies and suggest that the barrier between realms is fraying.

By the time the story reaches My Soul To Take, secrets going back years finally collide. A long vanished figure returns through the portal with Quin’s old enemy at his side. Cara is forced to confront what her curse truly is and what it might cost both of them to end it. The question hanging over every choice is simple and brutal: can they find a way to be together in life, or will they only ever meet on the far side of death.

This trilogy is heavier on romance and metaphysical questions than the earlier Freak House books, but it still uses the house and its odd extended family as an anchor. If you have followed the setting from the beginning, the payoff feels both fresh and deeply connected to what came before.
