Series background & context
The 2nd Freak House Trilogy returns to the same eerie Victorian estate but hands the story to a new heroine and a man whose mind is almost as dangerous as any supernatural threat. These books deepen the mythology of Freak House and push its residents harder than ever.
Charity Evans is a teacher at a London school for orphans when we meet her in The Memory Keeper. She wants nothing more than to lock away a traumatic past and build a simple, useful life. Hypnotist Samuel Gladstone offers her exactly that: he can block her worst memories. The price is trust, something Charity is reluctant to give any man, let alone one who works inside other people’s minds.
The procedure does not go as planned. Instead of peaceful blankness, Charity and Samuel both begin to experience vivid visions that include a third person they cannot identify. The visions hint at a shared history neither remembers clearly. They also carry a warning that the dark events that scarred Charity’s childhood may be far from over.
As the trilogy continues through Seared With Scars and Edge of Darkness, Freak House again becomes both sanctuary and trap. The lingering spirit of a previous villain haunts the estate. Samuel’s father is murdered by a demon on the grounds, dragging old sins into the open. Each answer about Samuel’s past and the nature of his gift comes with a new, sharper question.
Charity’s struggle is not just external. She is terrified of losing herself, either to the memories that want to break free or to a love she is not sure she can trust. Samuel, for his part, is sliding toward obsession, desperate to protect her even as his own secrets threaten to undo everything.
The atmosphere here is slightly darker than in the first Freak House books, with more focus on psychological tension and the cost of tampering with memory. Even so, the series still delivers the things that made readers fall for Freak House in the first place: a mismatched household that feels like family, brushings with the uncanny and a romance that asks what it really means to see someone clearly and still choose them.
